Nigerian Policemen Extort N40,000 From Lagos Residents At Gunpoint, Take-It-Back Group Demands Trial Of Officers

The group, who mentioned this in a tweet on Tuesday, narrated how some personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, Lagos State command, Adeniji Adele division extorted N40,000 from some residents at gunpoint.

Human rights and pro-democracy group, Take-It-Back Movement (TIB) has raised the alarm over frequent occurrence of extortion and brutality cases by personnel of the Nigeria Police Force.

The group, who mentioned this in a tweet on Tuesday, narrated how some personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, Lagos State command, Adeniji Adele division extorted N40,000 from some residents at gunpoint.

The TIB noted that the six youths were on their way to Elegushi area when they were accosted by the policemen and made to part with the money for no just reason.

The group wrote: “We are disturbed by frequent reports of harassment of commuters, especially young people by @PoliceNG officers attached to the Adeniyi Adele division.

“Only yesterday, we had to intervene in one of such reports involving six young men who were harassed, and subsequently extorted of forty thousand naira at gun point. They were on their way to Elegushi when they were accosted with this unfortunate fate.”

The group also thanked the Divisional Police Officer at the Adeniyi Adele Division for his instant intervention on the matters.

The statement continued: “Thankfully, the DPO  of the division waded in after we brought it to his attention, and subsequently ensured the young men were refunded of their money.

“While we appreciate the intervention of the DPO of the division, we insist that the men behind this act be arrested, and prosecuted without delay. #WeCantContinueLikeThis”
