Nigerian Police Disband Edo Team Which Ran Vehicle Over Citizen As Officers Face Disciplinary Charges

A statement on Wednesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi added that the policemen were all facing disciplinary charges at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, while enjoining members of the public to always cooperate with police officers.

The Acting Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the disbandment of a police team involved in a viral and disturbing incident where the policemen ran a vehicle over a citizen on Thursday June 29, 2023 at Ekpoma, Edo State.

A statement on Wednesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi added that the policemen were all facing disciplinary charges at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, while enjoining members of the public to always cooperate with police officers.

SaharaReporters had on June 30 reported that the IGP condemned the disturbing incident and directed the erring policemen, who had been in detention in Edo State, to report to the Force Headquarters, Abuja, for further action.

In an update on Wednesday, the Force spokesman, Adejobi, said, “EDO POLICE MISCONDUCT: In a bold move to address the unprofessional conduct of some Police Officers attached to the Edo State Police Command who were responsible for running over a citizen at Ekpoma, the Acting Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has taken the decisive action of disbanding the team forthwith.

“This step aims to regularise and standardise police operations in the axis; and restore public trust in the Police Force. Additionally, the operatives involved are currently facing disciplinary charges and administrative procedures. This move underscores the commitment of the IGP to hold officers accountable for their actions which will never be tolerated in the Nigeria Police Force.

“The Inspector-General of Police reiterates his commitment to ensuring the highest standards of professionalism and ethics, while urging members of the public to always cooperate with Police Officers in the discharge of their statutory duties.”

In the disturbing video shared by a Twitter user, @PIDOMNIGERIA, a man in hand cuffs was seen being crushed by some police officers in a minibus in Ekpoma, Edo state.

The video shows the victim lying on the floor in front of the patrol car. Residents of the area were talking to police when suddenly, one of them who was driving the car, moved it forward and crushed the victim, with one of the tires rolling over the helpless man. He later stopped the vehicle as residents repeatedly yelled that the victim was under the car.

“Nigerian police @police is extremely heartless. See how they knocked down this young man, and later crushed him. He is currently at Irrua Specialist hospital in Edo state, battling with his life,” @PIDOMNIGERIA had captioned the video.
