Open Letter: Expectations Of Nigerians For A Secure And Prosperous Nation, By Saleh Shehu Ashaka

Open Letter
July 9, 2023

Dear Nuhu Ribadu,

I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits as you assume your new role as the National Security Advisor of Nigeria. On behalf of millions of Nigerians, I would like to express our hopes and expectations regarding the security challenges that our nation currently faces.

Nigeria is a country blessed with immense human and natural resources, yet we continue to grapple with various security threats that undermine our progress and development. From insurgent groups wreaking havoc in the Northeast, banditry and kidnappings plaguing many states, to increasing cases of armed robbery and violence in different parts of the country, the security situation demands urgent attention and decisive action.

As the National Security Advisor, we expect you to take a proactive approach in addressing these challenges. Here are some key areas where we believe your expertise and leadership can make a significant difference:

1. Intelligence and Information Sharing: Enhance intelligence gathering and sharing mechanisms among different security agencies. Establish a robust network that promotes seamless information flow and collaboration to detect and deter criminal activities. This will require investment in technology, training, and interagency cooperation.

2. Counterinsurgency Operations: The fight against insurgent groups such as Boko Haram and ISWAP requires a comprehensive strategy that includes military operations, intelligence-driven tactics, and efforts to address the root causes of extremism. Coordinate with the armed forces, police, and other relevant agencies to ensure a cohesive and effective approach.

3. Border Security and Migration Management: Strengthen border controls to prevent the influx of illegal weapons, drugs, and criminal elements into the country. Collaborate with neighboring countries to improve intelligence sharing and joint patrolling of shared borders. Develop a robust migration management system that effectively screens incoming and outgoing travelers while facilitating legitimate trade and movement.

4. Community Engagement and Trust-building: Actively engage with communities affected by insecurity and build trust between the population and security forces. This can be achieved through community policing initiatives, regular town hall meetings, and fostering dialogue with local leaders and stakeholders. It is crucial to empower communities to participate in their own security and provide them with the necessary tools and support.

5. Cybersecurity: In an increasingly digital world, Nigeria must also prioritize cybersecurity efforts. Develop strategies to combat cybercrime, protect critical infrastructure, and safeguard personal and sensitive data. Collaboration with international partners and investment in technology and skilled personnel will be essential in this endeavor.

6. International Cooperation: Terrorism and organized crime are transnational challenges that require international collaboration. Forge strong partnerships with neighboring countries, regional organizations, and global allies to share intelligence, coordinate efforts, and disrupt the activities of criminal networks operating across borders.

7. Transparency and Accountability: Promote transparency and accountability within the security sector to enhance public trust and confidence. Establish mechanisms for oversight, reporting, and investigation of alleged human rights abuses by security personnel. Upholding the rule of law and ensuring that those responsible for misconduct are held accountable will contribute to a more just and inclusive society.

8. Socioeconomic Development: Recognize the correlation between security and socioeconomic development. Addressing poverty, unemployment, and inequality can help reduce the conditions that breed crime and insecurity. Invest in education, job creation, and infrastructure development to improve the livelihoods of Nigerians and create opportunities for all.

We understand the daunting task that lies ahead, but we have faith in your abilities and commitment to serving our nation. We urge you to prioritize the safety and well-being of Nigerians and work tirelessly to restore peace and stability to our beloved country.

Thank you for your attention to this matter, and we look forward to witnessing positive outcomes under your leadership.

Yours sincerely,

Saleh
