The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) has invited all human rights associations and concerned citizens to a massive protest slated for Tuesday, 11th of July, 2023 over the slow prosecution of a driver of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), Andrew Nice Ominnikoron, for alleged sexual assault and murder of a 22-year-old fashion designer, Ayanwole Oluwabamise.
This was contained in a statement released by the human rights group on Monday while expressing its displeasure over the manner in which relevant stakeholders are handling Bamise’s alleged murder case.
CDHR added that the union had already got the consent of the bereaved family on their planned protest.
The statement reads: “Fellow Compatriots, as per our collective decision at the State General Meeting held yesterday Sunday 9 July, 2023 , we have resolved to embark on a PEACEFUL PROTEST to the Lagos State House of Assembly and Governor's Office on Tuesday 11 July, 2023.  Tomorrow Tuesday 11 July, 2023 will make it exactly 500 DAYS (1 year, 4 months, 15 days) since the 22yr old OLUWABAMISE AYANWOLA was brutally murdered (Saturday 26 February, 2022) inside a BRT bus owned by Lagos State Government and being operated by LBSL (Lagos Bus Services Ltd.) yet JUSTICE is yet to be obtained.  The pertinent question we are asking is this: "If Bamise was to be the daughter of a Governor or daughter of a Senator or daughter of a Member of the House of Assembly, will the case be dragged this far"?  POSER FOR LAGOS STATE GOVERNMENT.
“As such, we are hitting the street tomorrow. I spoke with Bamise's elder sister, Damilola yesterday night. I also spoke with the mother of Late Bamise to inform the family of our plan and the family is in full support of our proposed action.
“So, Comrades, this is the time to prove the stuff we are made off.   Let us assemble at Rights House tomorrow Tuesday 11 July, 2023 by 11.00 am from where we shall move en mass to the State Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja.
“I have already sent an  SMS to the PPRO, Lagos Police Command this morning informing him of our proposed action. PEACEFUL PROTEST is allowed. We shall provide tags with the inscription JUSTICE FOR BAMISE for as many as shall be part of this all-important protest.  Many Thanks to you all.  ALUTA. CONTINUA.”

“As a corollary to the above, CDHR is hereby calling on all other Human Rights organisations, as a matter of fact, members of the entire CIVIL SOCIETY to join us in this  ALL-IMPORTANT PROTEST.”
