The police in Anambra State, southeast Nigeria say their surveillance operatives arrested a lone gunman at a popular hotel (name withheld) in Awka, Anambra State capital.
The spokesman for the state police command, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, who disclosed this in a statement made available to SaharaRepoters on Sunday said that the surveillance operatives observed the man prowling around the hotel premises on Thursday and accosted him.
He said they subsequently conducted a search on his person and found a gun with him.
The police spokesperson said the gunman identified as Akuchieani Echezona, a resident of Ifite Awka, had with him one English-made pistol and three rounds of live ammunition.
Ikenga said the suspect was disarmed, arrested and taken into custody, adding that the state police commissioner, CP Aderemi Adeoye, had ordered the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Awka to take over the case and investigate the source of the weapon as well as the gunman's intention for going armed to the hotel.
He said the suspect will be arraigned in court at the conclusion of the investigation.
