SaharaReporters learnt that some of the abandoned and worsening roads are; Igbogbo-Baiyeku Road, Cemetery to Igbogbo and Itamaga to Gberigbe to Igbe Lara Roads.
Several communities in the Ikorodu Local Government Area of Lagos State are battling with bad and impassable roads, abandoned for many years, as residents call on the state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to come to their rescue and fix the roads.
SaharaReporters learnt that some of the abandoned and worsening roads are; Igbogbo-Baiyeku Road, Cemetery to Igbogbo and Itamaga to Gberigbe to Igbe Lara Roads.
Other residents said the construction work was either too slow or some places left to rot away at the mercy of articulated vehicles, indiscriminate disposal of refuse and flooding.
Some of the residents who spoke with TVC News in a report noted that most of the road projects had been stalled for months and years, leaving them at the mercy of floods and causing untold hardship to the people living in the areas.
“The Igbogbo-Baiyeku road stands stalled. It was supposed to commence from Odofin to Ebute Igbogbo; 12 months into the project, not much has changed. This leaves our vehicles at the mercy of mechanics.
“We are battling with deplorable roads. Specifically, the one I am addressing now was commissioned in September 2017. It is the Ehute-Igbobo-Lara road. From Ebute to Cemetery has been completed, but from Cemetery to Igbogbo has been abandoned,” a resident said.
“Also from Igbogbo has been completed up to Olumo, but it is not full completion, the median block at the middle has been overtaken by weeds. We are appealing to the state government to focus on Ikorodu LGA, most especially Igbogbo-Baiyeku LCDA,” another resident said.
Also, Adewale Akinrotimi, another resident said, “Most of the communities here are over 250 CDAs; we are suffering. The population in this part of Ikorodu cannot be less than 500,000 people; we are suffering from the failure of the company to finish the road.”
“There is no way we can enjoy the road without the government connecting it to Itamaga and Gberigbe areas. It also has to connect from Igbelara to Ginti, so that the communities can have better livelihoods.
“The major infrastructure the government can do for us is to fix our poor roads. For example, for our electricity, we sourced for all the equipment by ourselves but we cannot do same for roads, we can only do palliatives. We have been doing that for over 10 years.”
“Our expectation is that for the next four years, the governor should help us fast-track these roads and complete them. The inner roads have been handled by the CDA, there is no way we don’t spend at least N2million every year on fixing inner roads.
“We also have the Odo Afa bridge. This is Lara and Igbe road. It starts from Igbogbo and ends at Ijede, Ginti. It covers about 30 CDAs. This road is a major road and we don’t have financial capability to handle it. All the inner roads, we mandated ourselves to grade all the roads. We contributed and paid for them but this main road is causing a major problem for all of us,” another resident explained.
