Cadet Sulaiman Jika Died Of ‘Brief, Unexpected Illness’ Not Negligence, Lack Of Drugs, Claims Nigeria Police Academy
September 3, 2023

SaharaReporters earlier reported that the year-one student died on Saturday at the institution’s medical centre.

The Nigeria Police Academy (POLAC) has expressed its condolences to the family and friends of Mr Sulaiman Jika, a cadet in the Department of Computer Science.

It said Jika died of “unexpected illness” and not due to lack of negligence at its clinic.

SaharaReporters earlier reported that the year-one student died on Saturday at the institution’s medical centre.

A classmate of the deceased who spoke on condition of anonymity narrated to SaharaReporters that the negligence of staff at the police training school cost Jika his life.

On the state of the clinic, a 400-level cadet said, “Yes, we do complain. If we go to the clinic, the highest drug they give us is Paracetamol. How can they give paracetamol for pneumonia?

“A cadet will go there sometimes and they’ll chase us back. We really need intervention, please. People are sick but they are scared to go to the clinic because even if they go, nothing will be done. Since this commandant came, he has made life very difficult for us. The food is nothing to write home about.”

But a statement issued by ASP Hussain Suleman, Police Public Relations Officer at the Nigeria Police Academy (POLAC), Wudil, Kano, said the academy was “deeply saddened to announce the passing of one of its cherished cadets, Mr. Sulaiman Jika, who succumbed to a brief and unexpected illness”.

It said, “Jika, a dedicated cadet from the Department of Computer Science, was a proud native of Adamawa state.

“On 29th August, 2023, he sought medical attention at the Academy Clinic due to an ailment. Following a diligent course of treatment and his gradual recovery, he was certified fit and discharged by the Medical Doctor on call the next day and tasked to return at regular intervals for checks which he adhered to.

“However, fate took an unforeseen turn. On 2nd September 2023, he was once again admitted to the clinic for further examination and care following a complaint of restlessness. Though his vitals were normal upon examination and all necessary medical steps were taken, we regrettably report his untimely passing.

“The Commandant of the Nigeria Police Academy, AIG Sadiq Idris Abubakar, extends his deepest condolences to the grieving family, friends, and loved ones of Cadet Sulaiman Jika. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this period of profound sorrow. May God Almighty grant them the strength and resilience to bear this heavy loss.”
