The police have deployed personnel to the University of Lagos (UNILAG) in southwest Nigeria.

The police say the deployment is necessary to forestall a breakdown of law and order.

However, according to students, it is to prevent them from expressing their displeasure over the arbitrary increase in tuition fees.

Some of the students staged a protest on Tuesday – the second one in one week – against the increment in tuition fees by the management of the university.

SaharaReporters reported on September 6 that personnel of the Lagos State Police Command shot at students of the school and members of the National Association of Nigerian Students protesting against tuition fee increment by the school authorities

Some of the protesting students and activists were arrested in the process but freed later.

However, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, the spokesperson for the state police command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, said the police personnel were deployed to prevent a breakdown of law and order.

“The policemen were only posted to the campus to maintain peace and order.

“They are not meant to restrict movement in and out of the school. People are going in and coming out freely,” he said.

Hundeyin said that the students and the school authorities were working together to reach an agreement that would satisfy both parties in the end.
