The International Press Centre’s (IPC) Centre for Safety and Protection of Journalists, has condemned in strongest terms, the alleged gruesome killing of the Voice of Nigeria (VON) reporter, Hamisu Danjibga, in Zamfara State.

SaharaReporters earlier reported that Danjibga who went missing in Zamfara State, Northwest Nigeria was found dead in a soakaway pit behind his house on Wednesday.

A statement by the Nigeria Union Journalist (NUJ), on Thursday, had recalled that Danjibga, a reporter with the Voice of Nigeria (VON), went missing earlier this week but was later found dead.

According to the statement signed by Zamfara NUJ Secretary, Ibrahim Gada, Danjibga's remains were found on Wednesday by some Islamic schoolchildren.

The statement had partly read, “Zamfara State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists regrets to announce the death of Hamisu Danjibga a reporter with Voice of Nigeria (VON) whose body was found in a soakaway behind his house three days after missing.

“The Council while expressing deep concern over the nature of Danjibga’s demise, appealed to security agencies to thoroughly investigate the matter and bring the perpetrators of the dastardly act to justice.”

Reacting to the death of the journalist, the Executive Director of IPC, Mr. Lanre Arogundade, described the circumstances surrounding Danjibga’s death as bizarre, considering that the family had raised an alarm that he was missing three days before his corpse was eventually found in a soak away pit in his house.

Arogundade in a statement issued by the Centre’s Press Freedom Officer, Melody Akinjiyan, said, “We urge security agencies to carry out immediate and thorough investigations to unravel the mystery surrounding his death. This will go a long way to bring succour to the family and colleagues that Hamisu Danjibga left behind.”
