Nigeria’s Delta Lawmakers Call For Arrest Of Sex Workers In State

The motion was seconded by the member representing Ika North East constituency, Marilyn Daramola-Okowa, daughter of the immediate past governor of the state, Ifeanyi Okowa.

The Delta State House of Assembly has called for a ban on the activities of sex workers across the state.

SaharaReporters learnt that the relevant motion was moved on Wednesday on the floor of the House of Assembly.

Moving the motion against the rising incidence of open sex trade and the use of illicit drugs amongst youths in the state and environs, the sponsor of the motion and member representing Oshimili South constituency, Bridget Anyafulu emphasised the need to curb the menace and put measure in place to arrest sex workers and youths doing illicit drugs.

The motion was seconded by the member representing Ika North East constituency, Marilyn Daramola-Okowa, daughter of the immediate past governor of the state, Ifeanyi Okowa.

Daramola-Okowa also called on the state governor, Sheriff Oborevwori to direct the Ministry of Women Affairs, Community and Social Development and other relevant government agencies to carry out training, campaigns and sensitization programmes, including counselling, rehabilitation and placement of posters and signage in strategic places in the state to educate and raise awareness on the dangers associated with the commercial sex trade and use of illicit drugs.

She also called for support for law enforcement agencies to ensure the arrest and prosecution of illicit drug sellers and commercial sex workers in accordance with applicable laws in the state.

Other lawmakers, Pekins Umukoro, (Chief Whip), Emeka Nwaobi, Majority Leader, Marilyn Daramola-Okowa, member representing Ika North East constituency, Oboro Preyo, member representing Bomadi constituency who spoke in favour of the motion called for support efforts of law enforcement agencies to ensure the arrest and prosecution of illicit drugs sellers, commercial sex workers and youths involved in the consumption of illicit drugs.

SaharaReporters gathered that the state government was ready to emulate neighbouring Edo in banning the activities of sex workers in the state.
