Chioma was arrested by the company with the help of the Nigerian Police Force over her Facebook post on one of the food products manufactured by Erisco.
Nigeria-based food manufacturing company, Erisco Foods Limited which used operatives of the Nigeria Police Force to arrest and intimidate one of its customers, Chioma Blessing Edoka, over her Facebook post on one of its food products, has demanded the sum of N5billion from the lady for alleged defamation.
SaharaReporters had reported how Chioma was arrested by the company with the help of the Nigerian Police Force over her Facebook post on one of the food products manufactured by Erisco.
SaharaReporters had also reported that the Nigeria Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) summoned Erisco Foods Limited over Chioma's arrest and that she was later released by the police.
However, Erisco Foods Limited in a further action against Chioma has, through its legal representative, Shina Agbesusi and Co. demanded N5 billion as damages.
Erisco Foods said that the said publication was published in bad faith for the reason that the product is bad and not fit for human consumption and that the product contains too much sugar which is capable of causing the deadly cancer as posted.
The food manufacturing company said that Chioma's post was intended to portray it as a fraudulent and criminal company, and as one of the enemies of Nigeria and its economy, adding that the post implied that it is not a trustworthy company.
Erisco Foods Limited further stated that Chioma's post suggested that its product should be left and abandoned by its teaming customers and consumers.
"It is our further instruction that everything you have written and published on your Facebook about our client and the said product is not only untrue, unfortunate but also meant to bring down our client and its products in the eyes of the public and to increase the sales of our client's competitors whose products you mentioned in your said post and publication and who you are probably working for whether directly or indirectly.
"We have been instructed that since the said post/publication, our client has received several calls and visits from its distributors, customers, suppliers, bankers and well-wishers within and outside Nigeria with most of them expressing surprise and disappointment at your Facebook post/publication.
"Take notice that unless a rejoinder and an apology is written/published in your Facebook post and three (3) other National Newspapers together with your bank draft in the sum of N5,000,000,000.00 (Five Billion Naira) as damages to our client's person and reputation is received in our chambers within seven (7) days of receipt of this letter, we may be compelled to institute legal proceedings against you and this is aside from taking other legal actions that may not be palatable to you," Erisco's legal representative added.
