Diploma Tinubu Submitted To Nigerian Electoral Body, INEC Not From Chicago State University, Says Registrar

Westberg, in his deposition on Tuesday, said CSU did not issue the diploma to Tinubu in 1979.

The Registrar of Chicago State University (CSU), Caleb Westberg, has said that the diploma President Bola Tinubu submitted to Nigeria’s electoral body, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), was not issued by Chicago State University (CSU).

Westberg, in his deposition on Tuesday, said CSU did not issue the diploma to Tinubu in 1979.

While answering questions from the counsel for Atiku Abubakar, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 election, Angela Liu, Mr Westberg said under oath that CSU did not issue a diploma dated June 27, 1979 to Mr. Tinubu in 1979.

When asked if he had ever seen a diploma purporting to be from CSU, but actually a forgery, Mr Westberg said ‘Yes’.

He also noted that he was aware of entities that create fake diplomas.

But when asked if he could give any examples of such entities, Mr Westberg said, “I cannot provide a name of an entity that does such. However, you can Google this easily. There are many companies that do this for folks.”

Mr Westberg also attested under oath that the school did not award the June 22, 1979 certificate that Tinubu submitted to INEC in June 2022.

When asked again if CSU had no record of issuing the 1979 diploma submitted by Tinubu to INEC, he replied, “Correct.”

Judge Nancy Maldonado of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois had directed CSU officials to provide Tinubu’s academic records to Atiku’s lawyers and make themselves available for deposition to authenticate them on Tuesday.
