Petroleum Fire Disaster Averted In Lagos

The Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, Mr Adebayo Taofiq, who disclosed this in a statement said that a tanker fully loaded with a petroleum product overturned and had its contents spilling towards residential buildings.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has said that its operatives on Saturday evening averted what could have been a major petroleum fire disaster at Ajayi Junction along Oke-Ira Road by Excellence Hotel, Ogba, Ikeja area of the state.

The Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, Mr Adebayo Taofiq, who disclosed this in a statement said that a tanker fully loaded with a petroleum product overturned and had its contents spilling towards residential buildings.

According to Taofiq, in order to avert an imminent fire disaster, LASTMA officials as the first responders arrived at the scene at exactly 8:00 p.m and immediately called other emergency responders, particularly the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services.

He said, “After arriving at the scene, our personnel immediately secured the environment against area boys including other members of the public who had already wanted to be scooping spilling fuel from the tanker."

Taofiq said that policemen from Oke-Ira Area 'G' Police Division also provided security backup at the scene with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services doing the needful, while motorists coming from Haruna or Ojodu Berger axis were diverted through Excellence Hotel to come out from Muyibi Street and link Oke-Ira proper to continue their journey.

He said that investigation revealed that trans-loading commenced immediately another tanker was brought to the scene by the owner.
