Nigeria's Former Internal Affairs Minister, Bello Maitama Yusuf Is Dead

Senator Yusuf, who represented the Jigawa South West constituency as a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria between 1999 and 2007, died at the age of 76.

Nigeria's former Minister of Internal Affairs and Commerce, Senator Bello Maitama Yusuf has died.

Senator Yusuf, who represented the Jigawa South West constituency as a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria between 1999 and 2007, died at the age of 76.

He was first elected Senator in April 1999 and subsequently reelected in April 2003.

Senator Yusuf a politician and businessman served as the Minister of Internal Affairs in 1979 and the Minister for Commerce in 1982.

As minister for commerce, he was instrumental in curbing the influx of imported goods into Nigeria, which was significantly impacting the nation’s foreign reserves.

In his home state of Jigawa, he was bestowed with the honorary title of “Sardaunan Dutse.”

He is also the recipient of the national honour – Grand Commander of the Niger (GCON).

A family friend of the deceased, Alhaji Hussaini Dalhatu, confirmed his death to journalists on Friday morning, adding that the funeral prayers for the deceased would take place after Jumat at the Emir of Kano’s palace.
