There have been controversies surrounding the decision of the government to expend such a huge amount of money on cars for lawmakers amid growing inflation, poverty and unbearable cost of living in Nigeria.

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), a civic group, has said that it will file an application to get a court injunction to stop the President Bola Tinubu-led Nigerian government from taking delivery of 465 exotic and bulletproof cars to members and principal officials of the National Assembly.

SERAP made this known on Monday night amid controversies surrounding the confirmation made on Monday by the Chairman of the House of Representative Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Hon. Akin Rotimi, that Tinubu’s will distribute Toyota Prado SUVs worth N130 million to each lawmaker.

There have been controversies surrounding the decision of the government to expend such a huge amount of money on cars for lawmakers amid growing inflation, poverty and unbearable cost of living in Nigeria.

SaharaReporters had reported that the former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Kingsley Moghalu, on Monday while condemning the allocation of the SUVs to the National Assembly members said that Nigeria is becoming a carcass while politicians in the country have become its scavengers with no sense of patriotism.

SERAP in a short statement on its X page (formerly Twitter) said, “We are filing an urgent application for injunction to stop Nigeria's National Assembly from taking delivery of 465 exotic and bulletproof cars (worth N40bn) for members and principal officials, pending the determination of the lawsuit on the matter.”
