According to the political party, three years after the nationwide protests against police brutality and corruption, the existential problems of structural inefficiency, gross malfeasance, incompetence and corruption still exist in full force in Nigeria.
The African Action Congress (AAC) party has decried the continued failure of the Nigerian government to bring the killers of October 2020 #EndSARS protesters and their sponsors to justice.
In a statement issued on Friday to mark the third anniversary of the protests and the October 20, 2020 massacre of protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate, the AAC described it as unfortunate that killers of the innocent and unarmed protesters have rather been rewarded with various official and social promotions.
The AAC further described it as an embarrassment that the man who mocked the victims of the Lekki Toll Gate massacre by soldiers is now Nigeria’s president (Bola Tinubu).
When asked about the shooting of protesters at the toll gate, the then-All Progressives Congress National Leader had asked, “Casualties of Lekki shootings have some questions to answer; how are they there? How long were they there? What kind of characters are they?”
According to the political party, three years after the nationwide protests against police brutality and corruption, the existential problems of structural inefficiency, gross malfeasance, incompetence and corruption still exist in full force in Nigeria.
The statement read, “Today, we remember the struggle of the Nigerian people and the massacre that was the response of the Buhari regime.
“3 years down the line and the existential problems of structural inefficiency, gross malfeasance, incompetence and corruption are still with us.
“We remember that those who killed hundreds of our youths were instead given official and social promotion.
“Some are Governors today, Commissioners, high-ranked Army officers, promoted Police officers et al.
“To cap the anyhowness, the one who mocked the dead on the morning of the #LekkiMassacre is now President.
“What an embarrassment! Have we as a people learnt anything at all?
“Our party will continue to do the work of mass education so Nigerians can see beyond these criminal elements and take their future in their hands. We believe strongly that until a revolution, all other reforms will amount to just scratching the surface.
“We salute all heroes of the struggle and we honour those who were killed, just because they protested not to be killed.
“We also use the opportunity of today’s memorial to demand the immediate release of #EndSARS protesters who are still languishing in jail. #FreeTheLiving; the implementation of all recommendations of the Lagos Judicial panel that indicted.
“Full implementation of panel recommendations across all states where these panels were organized, and an end to impunity, corruption and mass poverty in the country.”
Also, the presidential candidate of the party in the 2019 and 2023 presidential elections, Omoyele Sowore, while commenting on the bloody brutality and killings of #EndSARS protesters at Lekki Toll Gate and other parts of the country, said, “We will never never forget, we will never forgive those who took innocent lives of peaceful protesters!”
