At least one person has been confirmed dead when suspected Boko Haram members reportedly attacked the Nigerian Customs Service outpost at Geidam in Yobe State, a border town with Maine-Soroa in the Niger Republic on Sunday.
The deceased person was a Customs officer.
As of the time of filing this report, neither security operatives nor the Yobe State Government has responded to the attack, but local sources familiar with the situation confirmed it.
Baffa Ali, a Geidam local, told Channels TV over the phone that the attackers arrived on Saturday night, burned down the Customs patrol van, and stole cell phones from bystanders while the other cops fled for their lives.
Another dweller of the community, Abubakar Makintami, speculated that the assailants may have taken advantage of the curfew time to simply walk around the outskirts of the Geidam neighbourhood and conduct the atrocities.
Residents are concerned about the situation, and they are calling on security authorities and the government to solve the recent cluster of attacks by suspected insurgents.
Geidam is located about 30 kilometres away from Nigeria/Niger Republic border.
