The soldier, Sanna Fadera, was found guilty of treason, while three other accused soldiers were acquitted of all charges.

Fadera is the ringleader of a group of eight soldiers who were charged with treason and conspiracy in January for their role in the December 21, 2022 coup attempt.

Two civilians and a police officer were also charged with concealment of treason and conspiracy to commit a felony, but they were acquitted and released mid-trial.

Seven, including the two civilians and the officer, were acquitted and released mid-trial.

Gambia is a small West African nation of 2.5 million people that is almost entirely surrounded by Senegal. It has a history of coups, and the latest attempt is a sign of the country’s political instability.

Fadera has denied all charges and has 30 days to appeal the verdict.
