The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has asked President Bola Tinubu’s government to identify, arrest and punish those responsible for the arrest of the Nigeria Labour Congress President, Comrade Joe Ajaero.

SaharaReporters earlier reported the arrest of Ajaero by the police in Owerri, the Imo state capital while organizing a rally to protest against stalled wage payments for workers in the state.

The NLC later said Ajaero was “thoroughly” brutalised and almost blinded.

But in a press statement released by Imo State Command Public Relations Officer, ASP Okoye Henry, the police claimed that Ajaero was taken into custody for protection.

Meanwhile, SERAP urged Tinubu's government to ensure that the people behind the arrest of Ajaero are brought to justice.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), SERAP said, “BREAKING: The Tinubu administration must immediately identify, arrest and bring to justice those responsible for the arbitrary arrest and ill-treatment of NLC President, Joe Ajaero. Authorities must allow Nigerian workers to exercise their human rights. This impunity must stop.”
