The villages attacked were Koshebe, Karkut and Bulabulin, less than 20 kilometres from Maiduguri, the Borno State capital in northeast Nigeria.

No fewer than nine Zabarmari farmers working on their rice fields in the Mafa local government area of Borno State have been reportedly killed by gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram terrorists.

The villages attacked were Koshebe, Karkut and Bulabulin, less than 20 kilometres from Maiduguri, the Borno State capital in northeast Nigeria.

It was learnt that the victims were attacked by the gunmen on Sunday.

According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency expert and security analyst in the Lake Chad region, security forces and the Civilian Joint Task Force in Borno are searching for missing persons following the attack.

The counter-insurgency expert said the terrorists rode motorcycles to the communities and divided themselves into three groups before attacking the farmers.

The attackers did not use guns; they used cutlasses and knives to stab the victims in multiple parts of their bodies, according to the report.

The report quoted sources as saying that “nine bodies were recovered as of Sunday night,” while the search for others who fled the attacks was still ongoing.
