Some parents of the abducted students of the Federal University, Gusau, have lamented how the Zamfara State government abandoned them to their fate, after 45 days that their wards were abducted.

SaharaReporters had reported how the terrorists, locally dubbed as bandits, attacked three off-campus hostels at Sabon Gida, one of the university's hosting communities on the outskirts of Gusau.

They had abducted about 24 students along with some residents of the community in the early hours of Friday, September 26, 2023.

Shortly after the students were abducted, the state governor, Dauda Lawal, had reportedly embarked on a trip to the United States of America.

Some of the parents, who pleaded anonymity, disclosed that several attempts they made to secure the release of their children failed woefully.

They added that the bandits threatened that they would not release the female students numbering over 20, because of "the failure of the state government to negotiate with them as well as the corrupt practices of some officials in the government in the whole saga."

According to the parents, the bandits claimed that the abduction was planned with some collaborators in the state government to implicate the federal government over the escalating security situation bedevilling the state.

"If not so, why did the bandits reject the sum of N52million we contributed as parents, guardians and other community members to secure the release of our children?

"Why are the bandits also alleging that they have been promised a huge amount and until that promise is fulfilled, they will not release our children?" a distressed parent queried.

"So, who made the promise of the said huge sum?" another parent added.

One of the parents also alleged that "there were stories flying around that the bandits were promised N500million to carry out the abduction and that our children are still being held because the promise was not fulfilled."

Meanwhile, the parents, guardians and siblings of the abducted students scolded Governor Dauda Lawal for "not making efforts to ensure that their children and wards were released unharmed."

The parents also alleged that the governor, who promised them that the students would be rescued unharmed, had abandoned the issue as he was currently out of the state planning to travel overseas.
