The NLC said that Ajaero and other national leaders of the union were in Imo to fight for workers in the state who owed 31 months of salaries and over 10,000 others who Governor Hope Uzodimma declared ghost workers.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has said that its National President, Joe Ajaero and other national leaders of the labour union who were attacked and brutalised in Owerri, Imo State capital by thugs and police officer, were in the state on the directive of the union’s National Executive Council (NEC).

The NLC said that Ajaero and other national leaders of the union were in Imo to fight for workers in the state who owed 31 months of salaries and over 10,000 others who Governor Hope Uzodimma declared ghost workers.

Meanwhile, Governor Uzodimma had claimed in an interview on Channels Television that Ajaero who was attacked at the NLC state secretariat at the buildup of the November 11 governorship election in the state, acted on his personal interest because he had a candidate in the election.

But in a clarification made on Tuesday as it commenced its nationwide strike over Ajaero’s and other issues it has with the Nigerian government, the labour asked its members across the country not to be deceived but to understand the truth that it fights for the rights of every worker in Nigeria.

The statement noted that “The NLC President was in Imo State on the directive of the NLC National Executive Council to fight for workers who were owed 31 months of salaries and over 10 thousand workers who were unjustly declared as ghost workers in Imo State.

“Every worker should understand the truth, NLC fights for the rights of every worker, do not be deceived.

“He was attacked and brutalized in the course of this civic duty by Imo State Governor’s thugs and the police.”
