November 29, 2023

Recall that SaharaReproters had reported how bandits on Monday evening attacked the community and kidnapped some residents.

Students at the Federal University of Lafia in Nasarawa State who live in the Gandu community area said they have been living in fear due to regular kidnappers and bandits’ attacks on the community.

Recall that SaharaReproters had reported how bandits on Monday evening attacked the community and kidnapped some residents.

A source in the community had confirmed this to SaharaReporters on Tuesday morning, adding that several others also sustained injuries during the bandits’ attack that occurred around 7 pm on Monday.

Those who sustained injuries have been rushed to a nearby facility for immediate medical attention.

In a video made available to SaharaReporters, one of the victims of the attack was seen lying on a bed at the hospital subconsciously and it was yet to be ascertained if he was a student or an indigene of the community.

On Wednesday, it was learnt that the attackers killed a mechanic and kidnapped his wife and daughters during the invasion.

During a visit to the community on Tuesday, Daily Trust noted that both students and inhabitants of the area were indoors even during the day, unable to walk freely for fear of being abducted or having their cell phones smashed by these suspected terrorists.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Rahman Nansel also confirmed the incident. He said one person was killed by the kidnappers, adding that the kidnappers abducted the wife of the deceased.

"Our personnel in the command went back with a re-enforcement team to save the entire Gandu community, but before they could reach the house of the deceased, his wife was taken to a yet-to-be-identified destination. Our personnel combed the entire area but all efforts to rescue the woman proved abortive," he added.

Some students of the Federal University of Lafia who pleaded for anonymity and whose phones were snatched by the suspected gunmen said their lives are always in danger and that they are no longer safe in the Gandu community, lamenting that at 6:pm after students return from their daily lectures, they don't go out again until the next day for fear of being attacked and kidnapped by the kidnappers.

One of them said, "Students and the entire Gandu community cannot sleep with their two eyes closed owing to the persistent kidnapping activities. A moment students go for their lectures their rooms will be buggled before they return from school."

"We are appealing to the state government to fulfil the promise he made to establish a police outpost in Gandu community when Governor Abdullahi Sule paid a sympathetic visit to the vice-chancellor of the federal university of Lafia, so that students can sleep with their two eyes closed," he lamented.
