There is palpable tension as hundreds of youths and other residents of Kano State stormed the streets of Kurna quarters along Katsina Road to protest the killing of a teenager by a trigger-happy police inspector.

SaharaReporters gathered that trouble started in the early hours of Tuesday when some gangs of political thugs clashed, disrupting the peaceful atmosphere in the area.

However, one of the policemen deployed to the scene of the incident to keep the crisis from escalating, embarked on sporadic shooting at the crowd to disperse the thugs.

A teenager in the process who was standing around the area was shot and killed by one of the policemen.

The killing of the young boy, who was reportedly not part of the thugs, was said to have provoked the youths to embark on the protest demanding the arrest and prosecution of the trigger-happy police officer.

Sequel to the protest that is said to be raising tension, coupled with the planned protest against the Court of Appeal judgment that affirmed the sacking of Governor Abba Yusuf of the New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP), the Kano State Police Command has declared that the inspector responsible for incident had been arrested.

The Command's spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna, who announced the arrest in a statement posted on its official X handle on Wednesday, stated that police were fully committed to respecting the rights and freedom of all people.

Explaining the circumstances that surround the shooting of the teenage boy the Command's spokesman said, “The police command is following up on the unfortunate development that occurred in Kurna Quarters, Fagge LGA, Kano State, on November 28, where groups of rival restive youths engaged in fighting and a police inspector who did not receive any command from the existing chain of command fired a shot and unfortunately wounded two persons, as one other person died while receiving treatment at the hospital.

“It is in the forgoing development that the Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed  Gumel, directed the Area Commander Dala, ACP Nuhu Digi, to fish out the erring police inspector with a view to constituting a board of inquiry into the cause of the incident, of which the outcome will be communicated to the public. The police inspector has since been arrested and is now in police custody.

“This action of the police inspector is quite regrettable. This is because, since the assumption of office by the CP, the police have never entered into a confrontation with members of the public, talk less of firing gunshots.

“The police command is fully committed to respecting the rights and freedom of all people. Therefore, the command is calling on members of the public to be rest assured that justice will be served in handling the situation.”

The Commissioner of Police, while commiserating with the family of the deceased, urged members of the public to remain calm, as the command is taking the incident with utmost seriousness and is committed to upholding the principle of justice and transparency.
