December 13, 2023

The Freedom Concert Organizing Committee has announced its upcoming Freedom Concert scheduled for Saturday, December 16, 2023.

The event is scheduled to kick off at 3 pm at the Ayuba Waba House in Abuja.

A statement signed by the FCOC Chair, Oladimeji Sadare, on Wednesday, said the event would bring together “a diverse audience of young people, including anti-war activists, community organizers, trade unionists, socialist activists and a host of others”.

He said one of the issues that would be discussed is the unending trial of the #RevolutionNow convener, Omoyele Sowore by the Nigerian government and its refusal to allow him see his family in the US.

Sadare said, “In a world grappling with unprecedented human suffering and global crises, the 2023 Freedom Concert stands as a powerful testament to the urgent need for solidarity, justice and social change.

“That is why we have put the event together to address critical issues such as the ongoing conflicts in Russia on Ukraine war including the unprecedented human slaughter in Israel and Palestine. We would also scrutinize the economic sanctions imposed on nations like the Venezuela and Cuba.

“The organizing committee underscores the importance of building a united international solidarity campaign to respond to the blatant injustices occurring around the world.

“Notable cases including Mr. Omoyele Sowore’s enduring trial and separation from his family since 2019.

“Diplomat Alex Saab’s questionable detention since 2020, and the extradition attempts against Mr. Julian Assange, highlight the critical need to concerted efforts to combat the varying degrees of human rights abuses.

“The Freedom Concert also serves as a platform to amplify the voice of young people advocating for human rights, social justice, a just and sustainable world.

“Through the universal language of music and unity, the event aims to evoke positive emotions, inspire action, and encourage citizen engagement in democratic processes.”

“The committee believes that genuine democracy and justice are essential foundations for ensuring that every citizen has access to social development services.

“By promoting accountability and advocating for the equitable distribution or resources, the Freedom Concert contributes to the ideals of peace, social justice and equality,” he added.

Sadare, a member of the Freedom Concert Organizing Committee noted that this year’s event “seeks to serve as a platform to empower, inspire and provide a voice of the youth in their pursuit of a world marked by lasting peace”.
