Why My Call For Akeredolu’s Resignation Is Not To Govern Ondo State –Sowore
December 17, 2023

Akeredolu on Wednesday, December 13, 2023, embarked on another medical leave as a follow-up to his treatment.

#RevolutionNow convener, Omoyele Sowore has said that the ailing Ondo Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu did not return from his previous medical leave before proceeding on another on Wednesday.

Akeredolu on Wednesday, December 13, 2023, embarked on another medical leave as a follow-up to his treatment.

Richard Olatunde, chief press secretary to the governor, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday.

“During his medical leave, Governor Akeredolu will prioritise his health and ensure a full recovery before resuming his official duties,” the statement said.

Akeredolu earlier embarked on a three-month medical leave to Germany and returned to Nigeria in September but never returned to office.

Instead, Akeredolu stayed at his residence in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, where he received treatment for leukemia.

During a town hall meeting organised by the Take-It-Back Movement in Akure on Saturday to call for Akeredolu’s resignation, Sowore said the governor never returned to office from his last medical vacation, hence it was improper for him to seek a new medical leave from the State House of Assembly.

He said, “Somebody said he wants to go back to the hospital, and we asked them if you are writing a letter that you are going for another medical leave, did you come back from the last medical leave? Akeredolu did not come back since September, he has not set foot in Akure.”

Sowore also urged the people of the state to stand up against the misappropriation of public funds that has characterised the administration of Akeredolu.

He continued: “Ondo State people must stand up. People have asked me, ‘Oh, maybe Sowore wants to become the Governor of Ondo State. I said Ondo State is too small to govern. We have people who can govern Ondo State better than Aketi and they will contest in the next election and that is not what we are here for.”

According to him, “we want to govern the continent of Africa, that is our ambition, that is our desire.”

He said, “That is our goal. We want to unite Africa and govern it as one entity. So I am not here to become the Ondo State governor.

“I also want to say that it is a shame that all the professionals in Ondo State - lawyers, doctors, including the House of Assembly were scared. When we wanted to come for this meeting, they were scaring us up and down. DSS (Department of State Services) will arrest you. DSS will slap you. It is my state, come and slap me now.”

“We are here today, where are they?” he said, adding that they demonstrated courage.

“But we also want to use this opportunity to tell our traditional rulers not to be afraid of anybody. If this hall was not made available to us, we would have gone to his palace to hold this town meeting because palaces are designed to hold town meetings.”

“In fact, it is Yoruba people that started holding town meetings. The town hall will take place in the palace and depose the Oba and the Oba will pass through a different door,” he added.
