The Enugu State command of the Nigeria Police Force has warned residents to be vigilant while receiving and transacting in naira notes within the festive period.

The warning came as the operatives of the command serving in Awkunanaw Division arrested a man identified as Chukwuebuka Igwebuike aged 37, with a total of N362,000 counterfeit one thousand Nigerian Naira notes.

A statement by the command's spokesman, DSP Daniel Ndukwe on Friday, said that the suspect was arrested on December 19, 2023, at about 6pm at Afor Market, Garki Awkunanaw, in Enugu South Local Government area of the state.

Ndukwe said that a preliminary investigation had proven that the suspect confessed to the crime.

According to him, the suspect confessed that he used the fake one thousand Naira notes to buy items of small prices and get change for genuine smaller denominations.

"He shall be arraigned in court and prosecuted accordingly once ongoing investigations are concluded.

"Consequently, the Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, has urged citizens of the state and the public to be vigilant and wary of whom they receive and exchange all the denominations of mint Nigerian Naira with, especially this yuletide.

"Hence, he encourages the citizenry to quickly report anyone in possession of, or transacting in counterfeit Nigerian Naira notes, to the nearest Police Station for necessary policing actions," the statement partly read.
