Sani urged President Tinubu to use the monies to fund the budgets of public universities, polytechnics, colleges of education and federal government colleges.

Former Nigerian lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, has asked President Bola Tinubu to recover all the monies reportedly looted by former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Godwin Emefiele and ex-Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Sadiya Umar-Farouq.

Sani urged President Tinubu to use the monies to fund the budgets of public universities, polytechnics, colleges of education and federal government colleges.

Senator Sani made the call on Sunday while reacting to the report of the Special Investigator on the management of the CBN under the embattled former CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, which revealed how the apex bank spent N61,543,863,520.00 on the illegal printing of naira notes, among other infractions.

The full report, obtained and exclusively reported by SaharaReporters on Saturday stated that the redesigned Naira is “illegal and should be withdrawn from circulation with immediate effect. Mr. Godwin Emefiele, Mr. Folashodun Shonubi and other conspirators, in this regard, should be made to face criminal charges for this aberration that led to the loss of lives of many Nigerians, the closure of businesses and joblessness.

“The amount of the illegal Naira in circulation as at 9th August 2023 is N769.562 Billion which costs the Government the sum of N61,543,863,520.00 of which N31,799,328,880.80 has been paid.”

Sani was also reacting to the report of how the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) uncovered the sum of N37,170,855,753.44 allegedly laundered in the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development under former minister, Umar-Farouk during former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

Details of the ongoing probe according to Sunday PUNCH report, revealed that the money was transferred from the Federal Government’s accounts and sent to 38 different bank accounts domiciled in five legacy commercial banks belonging to or connected with a contractor identified as James Okwete.

It was reported that following receipt of the funds, Okwete allegedly transferred N6,746,034,000 to Bureau De Change Operators, withdrew N540,000,000 in cash, purchased luxury cars with N288,348,600, and bought luxury houses in Abuja and Enugu State with N2,195,115,000.

The details of the probe further revealed that 53 companies were allegedly traced to Okwete who was also said to have used 47 of the companies to lift Federal Government contracts amounting to N27,423,824,339.86.

Reacting to the reports on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, Senator Sani said, “President Tinubu should recover money looted from the CBN and the one looted from the Humanitarian ministry under the Buhari ‘integrity’ administration and specifically use it to fund the budget of our public Universities, Polytechnics, COEs and Federal Government Colleges.”

In another post, Sani said, “The CBN special investigation is a commendable job by this administration. But,it must not be suppressed or killed by political Pressures,Correctness considerations or party solidarity.

“It must not be kept to dust out of fear of political, regional, religious or ethnic blackmail or backlash. It must not end up in hollow public outrage.

“It must not just be for the media hype that will eventually fade. It must not target some culprits and spare others for political convenience.

“The courage to start and conduct the investigation should be followed by the will to sanctions those involved and recover Nigeria’s collective plundered wealth.”
