The Nigerian Correctional Service has confirmed the escape of three convicted inmates from the Ijebu Ode Correctional Centre, Ogun State.
This was announced in a statement issued by the Ijebu Imusin Area Command of the So-Safe Corps and obtained by PM News.
It identified the escaped inmates as Hammed Adeboyejo, an armed robbery and murder convict; Fatai Taiwo Akande, who was also convicted of murder; and Aliu Oguntona, who was sentenced for sexual offences.
It was learned that the inmates escaped from the prison around 3 am on Saturday.
The statement said, “The report reaching us now is that three prisoners escaped from the Ijebu-Ode Correctional Centre, whose names are Hammed Adeboyejo, who was convicted of Murder/Armed robbery; Fatai Taiwo Akande from Ijebu-Igbo, who was sentenced for murder; and the third man, Oguntona Aliu, who was convicted of sexual offence. In case you see any of them, quickly contact the office of the So-Safe Corps Command closer to you, the Nigerian Police, and any other security agency.”
The NCoS added it was working with other security agencies to find them and bring them back to the centre.
Last Thursday, the NCoS boasted that it recorded zero jailbreaks and attacks in its 253 custodial centres across the country in 2023.
Its spokesperson, Assistant Controller of Corrections Abubakar Umar, disclosed to the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja that the government had taken comprehensive measures to bolster the security of the facilities and effectively counteract any potential threats, whether originating from internal or external sources.
Umar said that the absence of jail attacks in Nigeria in 2023 was a testament to the robust security measures and the dedicated efforts of the security personnel which included various stakeholders.
He said that it reflected the agency’s commitment to maintaining a safe and secure environment within custodial centres and ensuring the well-being of inmates and staff alike.
“This achievement should be celebrated as a significant milestone in upholding law and order in the country,” he said.
Umar described the feat as remarkable, adding that it “speaks volumes about the effectiveness of the top-level security measures that have been diligently upheld in our custodial centres across the nation”.
