Emefiele had filed a fundamental human rights suit following his prolonged detention in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has vowed to appeal the judgment of a Federal Capital Territory High Court sitting in Abuja which slammed a sum of N100million fine against the commission over the detention of the embattled former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, without trial.

SaharaReporters earlier reported that the Court on Monday in a judgment delivered by Justice O.A. Adeniyi, slammed a sum of N100 million fine against EFCC over Emefiele’s detention without trial.

The Court also restrained the Nigerian government and its agents from rearresting or detaining Emefiele without an order of court.

Emefiele had filed a fundamental human rights suit following his prolonged detention in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

He prayed the court to order the respondents to pay him N1 billion damages and to restrain them from further arresting and or detaining him.

Reacting to the judgment, EFCC in a statement issued by its Head, Media & Publicity, Dele Oyewale, expressed dissatisfaction with the judgment, saying that “The decision failed to take cognizance of the fact that the former CBN boss was held with a valid order of court. Consequently, the Commission will approach the Court of Appeal to set it aside.”
