The explosion which occurred around Bodija caused panic in the city and beyond.
The African Action Congress (AAC) has urged Nigerians not to panic following Tuesday's explosion in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
The explosion which occurred around Bodija caused panic in the city and beyond.
Several people were injured while vehicles and buildings were also damaged by the explosion. However, the state government and the police have yet to state the cause of the explosion or the number of casualties.
There have been deployments of police officers and emergency responders to the scene.
In a statement on Tuesday night, the AAC commiserated with the “good people of Oyo State on the developing issue of a sudden explosion with serious impacts reaching areas around Bodija, Sango, etc.”
According to the party, describing the situation as unfortunate is making the issue appear mild.
The statement signed by Kayode Babayomi, AAC Oyo Chair, said, “Preliminary investigation has shown that the explosion has caused serious damage of property and there are casualties, while there are just speculations around the cause of the explosion.
“We want to implore Nigerians not to panic, as panicking at this time can cause more devastation. Medical, security personnel and volunteers are enjoined to help rescue the situation. It’s clear more than before, that we only have ourselves.
“We also want to state that independent efforts are underway to unravel the cause of the incident as we hope that the relevant authorities will swing into action. The Seyi Makinde-led administration should be reminded of the fundamental objectives of government, which are to secure lives and property and ensure welfare for the people.
“We urge the good people of Oyo State to remain vigilant of any suspicious elements, especially at this time and to eschew scaremongering.”
“We shall overcome,” the statement added.
