Activists have asked Nigerians to express their support or disapproval of gun legalization in Nigeria.
This is in response to the growing escalation of terrorist attacks and kidnappings in the West African country.
The activists, on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, published a survey with seven 'Yes' or 'No' questions regarding gun legalization.
In the description that preceded the poll, the activists explained that “in January 2024 alone, hundreds of farmers have been killed in the middle belt; thousands of Nigerians have been displaced from their ancestral communities; several women, young and old, have been raped on their farms and in their homes”.
They added that “monarchs have been killed in the southwest; kidnappers have taken over major roads and cities, including the Federal Capital Territory; and numerous Christians are soft targets for ethnoreligious terrorists.”
Some of the Yes or No questions asked in the poll include 'Liberalize Gun Rights for Farmers,' 'Liberalize Gun Rights in the Middle Belt,' 'Liberalize Gun Rights in Southern Nigeria,' and 'Support Permitless Carry for Famers Only,' which include Yes, No and Maybe response options.
According to Raphael Adebayo, one of the activists leading the campaign, Nigerians can change the course of history through their response to the survey and get the National Assembly and the Federal Government to liberalise gun ownership in Nigeria.
The opinion poll comes on the heels of the assassination of two monarchs in Ekiti State and the brutal attack on farmers by armed men suspected to be Fulani herdsmen in Southern Nigeria.
