Kallamu received 1,306 votes to defeat the incumbent and candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ibrahim Musa Italiya who got 874 votes.

The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Musa Mahmoud Kallamu has been declared the winner of Saturday's rerun election for the Mayo-Belwa State Assembly constituency in Adamawa State.

Kallamu received 1,306 votes to defeat the incumbent and candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ibrahim Musa Italiya who got 874 votes.

After the Court of Appeal nullified the election of APC's Ibrahim in November 2023, it ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a rerun election in seven polling units across three registration areas.

Declaring the results of the re-run election at the collation centre, the returning officer, Prof. Mohammed Baba Ardo of Modibbo Adama University Yola, said that PDP candidate, Kallamu, received a total number of 1,306 votes to defeat the candidate of the APC, Italiya who got 874 votes.

The returning officer noted that Kallamu won six out of the seven polling units in the election.

"Having scored the highest lawful votes cast and having satisfied the requirements of the law, Kallamu has been declared the winner and is returned elected," Ardo declared.

The returning officer declared the total number of registered voters as 5,024, adding that 2,252 votes were accredited while 2,192 valid votes were recorded. He said that six votes were rejected and a total of 2,252 votes were cast.

He explained that during the 2023 election, 20,824 valid votes were cast and that 367 votes were rejected. He further explained that out of the number, APC received 7,912 while PDP received 7,840 with a margin of 72 votes.

"The cumulative votes scored from the initial votes and the rerun election stand thus: registered votes 56,999; accredited votes 24,610 while the total votes cast is 23443," Ardo said.

He, therefore, declared that the candidate of the PDP who had a total of 9,146 votes in both elections won after the rerun election, adding that the APC candidate came second with 8,786 votes.

Kallamu is the current Commissioner of Transportation in Adamawa State.
