According to him, it will only become an armed wing of the ruling party of each state.

A former federal lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, has faulted the recent discussion around the creation of state police in Nigeria, saying that state police will not solve Nigeria’s security problem.

According to him, it will only become an armed wing of the ruling party of each state.

SaharaReporters last Thursday reported that President Bola Tinubu and the 36 state governors had a meeting and agreed to discuss further how to create state police to curb insecurity in the country.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, last week told State House correspondents that there was a discussion “around the issue of state police”.

The minister said, “The federal government and the state governments are mulling the possibility of setting up state police,” adding that it was “still going to be further discussed”.

Idris described the discussion along the line as a major shift considering that the Nigerian government under previous administrations had vehemently opposed the idea of state police.

According to the minister, there would be more meetings and work done to achieve it.

But Senator Sani in a post on Monday said that the idea of creating state police to solve the insecurity in the country is a mirage.

He asked what magic the state police would perform that the Nigerian military, the police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) could not perform to solve security problems in the country.

Senator Sani added that the creation of state police would be a recipe for anarchy.

He said, “The idea that State Police will solve all the security problems in the Country is a mirage. What magic can the state police perform that the military, police and civil defence couldn’t?

“The State police will simply be an armed wing of the ruling party of each state. It's a recipe for anarchy.”
