The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed the arrests of students of the Kwara State University (KWASU) for alleged internet fraud.

The anti-graft agency said its Ilorin Zonal Command personnel arrested 48 students and two others for offences bordering on internet fraud.

The agency said the suspects were arrested on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, in their various hideouts after days of surveillance and fruitful intelligence on their suspected involvement in internet-related offences.

Items recovered from the suspects include nine exotic cars, twenty-four (24) laptops and different brands of phones.

It said the suspects would soon be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations.

SaharaReporters learned that the operation took place at Malete in the Moro Local Government Area of Kwara State.

It was learnt that during a second raid of the school’s off-campus hostels, some students resisted arrest, following which the EFCC operatives along with personnel of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and police officers started shooting at the students.

Sources in the school told SaharaReporters that the security agents also used tear gas and some students had to be taken to the hospital.
