The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) president, Joe Ajaero, has asked the Nigerian government to as a matter of urgency announce immediate measures to stop hunger in the country.
SaharaReporters earlier reported that the members of the labour unions were seen in their large numbers at the Labour House Abuja from where they proceeded to the National Assembly.
NLC is demanding immediate intervention from the President Bola Tinubu-led Nigerian government to ease the hardships citizens are currently facing in the country.
They are also protesting the government's alleged failure to implement agreements reached between both parties on October 2, 2023, following the removal of the fuel subsidy.
However, Joe Ajaero while speaking to the protesters at the National Assembly complex asked the government to announce immediate measure to stop hunger in the country.
Ajaero asserted that the Federal Government was listening to the IMF, World Bank and international organisations while naira was depreciating.
The NLC President lamented that all African currencies are now bigger than Nigeria Currency, noting that Nigeria is on its way to Zimbabwe.
He said; "We have written letter to the president and articulated all the sufferings to him, and our procession is symbolic. Also beyond love letter we're writing, we have made our position known to Mr. President.
"There is no other aim of doing it, I believe that the federal government will do something to address the issues in the country. It is only when we waited for a long time, that will continue to cry out for them to do something for Nigerian workers. Because as of today, there are suffering in the land, there is suffering for the worker.
"Over 50million Nigerians are living below poverty line, when you say below it, those are the people that cannot get something to eat on daily basis. So it is our responsibility, and that has been the history of the labour movement to say it the way it is.
"Let the poor eat, Federal Government is listening to IMF, World Bank and international organizations while naira is is depreciating. All African currencies are now bigger than Nigeria currency. We are on the way to Zimbabwe. There is no light, we can't pay school fees with N30,000 minimum wages," he added.
Meanwhile, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Employment, Labour and Productivity, Diket Plang in his reaction promised to take all the complaints to the Senate leadership, for urgent attention.
