Adamawa Confirms One Lassa Fever Patient, Says Second Suspected Case Under Observation Amid Outbreak
March 4, 2024

A second suspected Lassa fever case amid an outbreak is currently under observation in Adamawa State, authorities have said.

This followed the government's declaration of the outbreak of the highly infectious disease on Friday at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp.

SaharaReporters recently reported that the Adamawa State Ministry of Health and Human Services had confirmed an outbreak of the disease.

At a press conference on Monday, the Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Felix Tangwami noted that only one out of the five samples examined at the National Reference Laboratory tested positive for Lassa fever.

He, however, disclosed that a roommate of the index case who was also receiving treatment at a hospital would be reexamined for the disease.

Tangwami assured that a rapid response team had been activated to tackle the spread of the outbreak throughout the state.

"Let me at this juncture call on the public to remain calm, follow health workers' instructions and report any symptoms similar to Lassa fever promptly," Tangwami said.
