Nigerian Non-Academic University Workers Issue One-Week Strike Notice Over Withheld Salaries
March 4, 2024

The unions accused the Nigerian Government of using divide-and-rule for approving withheld salaries of members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, without the slightest regards for non-academic personnel.

Two non-teaching staff unions of Nigerian public universities under the platforms of Senior Staff Union of Nigerian Universities, SSANU and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) have issued a one-week strike notice to the Nigerian government over the nonpayment of their four months' withheld salaries.

This was disclosed by the SSNAU President, Muhammed Haruna and the NASU General Secretary Peters Adeyemi during a press conference on Monday.

The unions accused the Nigerian Government of using divide-and-rule for approving withheld salaries of members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, without the slightest regards for non-academic personnel.

The two non-teaching staff unions claim that the government has always been to blame for the country's poor educational quality, since it has continuously frustrated workers, forcing them to down tools at various times.

The two unions argued that the government has not produced a path forward since announcing the exclusion of university-based unions from the controversial Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System, IPPIS.

SaharaReporters earlier reported that some ASUU members had received part of their withheld salaries which President Bola Tinubu promised to pay them since last October.

It was gathered further that only two out of the four promised by the government have been paid to ASUU while nothing was paid to SSANU members.

Reacting, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU threatened to embark a fresh industrial action over the government’s failure to fulfil its promises.

The vice president of the association, Dr Abdussobuur Salaam mentioned this during a telephone conversation with SaharaReporters.

Dr Salaam revealed that none of his colleagues nationwide has received their withheld salaries, between May, June, July, and August of 2022 from the government despite giving two months to their academic counterparts under the umbrella of Academic Staff Union of Universities(ASUU).
