The Nasarawa State Police Command says it has commenced an investigation into the alleged harassment and intimidation of students by police personnel at the College of Nursing and Midwifery Science, Lafia, the state capital.

Students of the college protested Monday against the molestation and harassment of two of their colleagues by police officers.

One of the protesters told SaharaReporters that the incident happened at about 10 pm on Saturday, March 9.

The source said, "Joseph Musa, a 21-year-old student from Kaduna state, who is a Year 2 nursing student was going to class and the girl, Joy Ishaya,  who is also a Year 2 nursing student was coming from the class from night-reading when they met the police officers at the checkpoint, where they were harassed and molested by the officers of the Nigeria Police Force.

"There have been series of harassment on the students, such as stopping us from taking motorcycle taxis to school, physical assaults on males students and use of unprintable comments on female students, thereby making life unbearable for us, especially when accessing our routes to the school environment.”

The state police public relations officer, DSP Ramhan Nansel, who confirmed the incident to SaharaReporters on Tuesday, noted that the officer the students accused of molesting their colleagues had been identified.

He said the officer would face sanctions if found guilty.

He said, "The command received their complaint yesterday, and the Commissioner of Police held a meeting with the students and school management on separate occasions. He rescheduled another meeting with both parties on Thursday this week.

"The allegation is being investigated and the CP assures the students that justice will be served.”

"The officer that the students accused was identified and an investigation has commenced. He will face sanctions if found wanting," he added.
