A Nigerian female student at the Abdu Gusau Polytechnic, Talata-Mafara, Zamfara State has lamented in a video on social media, how she was physically assaulted and injured by a Mobile Police officer on Monday while on her way to Sokoto State to get her National Identity Number (NIN).

The bleeding lady who did not disclose her name in the video posted by an X platform user, @ZagazOlaMakama, said that the police officer used a stick to inflict injury in her face for refusing to disclose her tribe.

She alleged that the officer who flagged down the commercial vehicle she boarded walked up to her while sitting in the vehicle and asked her which tribe she hails from but she refused to disclose her tribe but identified herself to the policeman as a student of Abdu Gusau Polytechnic.

She said that the officer insisted on knowing her tribe, making her question why he was specifically interested in her tribe after she identified herself as a student and mentioning her school.

Narrating her ordeal, she said, “I was travelling to Sokoto yesterday afternoon, because I was going to Sokoto for my NIN before we finished the semester so that I can use my NIN for my service (NYSC).

“On getting to a checkpoint, the police stopped our vehicle and the driver stopped. I had EarPod on my ears because I was watching a movie on my phone.

“He (one of the policemen) talked with the driver and after he finished with the driver, he came to the car door side because I was sitting inside the vehicle.

“He said hello and hit the door. I raised my head and said ‘good afternoon sir’ and he said ‘afternoon’, and then said ‘what indigene are you?’ I said I’m coming from Talata-Mafara sir. I’m a student. He said "No, that is not what I’m asking. What indigene are you?’ I said again that I’m coming from Talata-Mafara and I’m a student."

“I said, sir, why are you asking of my indigene? You cannot be asking for my indigene because you don’t have any business with my indigene and moreover, you don’t know me. I said I’m a student of Abdu Gusau Polytechnic.

"A lecturer of a state university was inside that vehicle with me. After the police officer ordered me to come out of the vehicle, I came out and he said he was going to break my head.

"He asked for my ID Card and I told him I don't have a school ID Card for now because they have not issued our ID Card to us. He asked for my NIN and I told him that was what I was going to Sokoto to do.

"He said 'I said it, this lady here is an ashawo (prostitute)'. Before he could finish saying ashawo, the lecturer came outside and confronted him on why he should call me ashawo. The lecturer told him that I'm a student and that I have made it clear to him.

"Then, their leader came and begged me to forget the whole thing and enter the vehicle. As they begged me, I wanted to enter inside the vehicle, the same police officer put the stick he was holding on my face.

"I touched the stick and told him to remove it so I could enter inside. Before I knew it, he intentionally hit me with the stick because he had already said that either he would kill or break my head."

SaharaReporters’ efforts to get the comment and reaction of the police failed as the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, did not answer calls made to his number nor responded to message sent to him till the time of filing this report.

However, it was gathered that the police officer hails from Adamawa State in the North East region of Nigeria.
