Nigerian Court Jails Teenage Mobile Phone Thief Three Years In Enugu

He was arrested for snatching an Android phone from a passenger in a moving minibus.

An Enugu North Chief Magistrate Court in Enugu State, southeast Nigeria, has convicted and sentenced a teenager Promise Happy to three years imprisonment for snatching a phone in a moving vehicle.

 

The 18-year-old convict is a native of Ozonogogo in Agbor Local Government Area of Delta State but is a resident at New Garriki Market, Awkunanaw, Enugu. He was reportedly arrested at about 7 pm on March 8 by personnel attached to the Central Police Station (CPS) of Enugu State Command.

 

He was arrested for snatching an Android phone from a passenger in a moving minibus.

 

According to the spokesman for the state police command, DSP Daniel Ndukwe in a statement, Promise Happy had been on the police criminal watchlist for stealing.

 

Ndukwe said that during an investigation, Promise Happy confessed to the crime, stating that he and his gang members at large had been stealing phones since 2022.

 

The police said a blue-coloured Redmi Android phone that he recently stole was recovered from him.

 

"Upon conclusion of investigation, the suspect was arraigned Thursday in the Enugu North Chief Magistrate Court of Enugu State, and sentenced to three (3) years imprisonment," he said.
