The police in Lagos State, southwest Nigeria have disclosed that their personnel arrested a crane operator for the death of a passerby killed by a cable drum.

SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesman for the state police command, disclosed this in a short statement posted on his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Sunday. Hundeyin said the crane operator was arrested for manslaughter and reckless and negligent acts.

He explained that the passerby who was engrossed in his mobile phone was killed by the cable drum that fell off its hook while being lifted from the crane.

Hundeyin said the crane operator did not put any warning or danger sign around the crane as he worked nor stationed anyone to ward off passersby.

Attached with photos of the cable drum and the crane and screenshots of the laws, the police spokesperson wrote, “The operator of this crane will likely spend life in prison. He did not put any warning or danger sign around the crane as he worked. Neither did he station anyone to ward off passersby.

“A passerby who was engrossed with his phone approached. By an unfortunate twist of fate, the cable drum being lifted fell off its hook and fell on the passerby, killing him instantly.

“Crane operator is in police custody for reckless and negligent act; and involuntary manslaughter.”
