Amnesty International Demands Immediate Release Of #EndSARS Protesters In Kirikiri, Other Detention Facilities Since 2020
March 26, 2024

Global human rights body, the Amnesty International, has demanded immediate release of Daniel Joy-Igbo, Sodiq Adigun, Shehu Anas, and Akiniran Oyetakin, who were arrested in Lagos in 2020 for participating in the #EndSARS protest, and have since remained in Kirikiri Medium Correctional Centre.

SaharaReporters had reported that Justice Nicole Clay of the Lagos State High Court discharged and acquitted three persons detained for their alleged involvement in the October 2020 #EndSARS protest.

The Take-It-Back Movement, a civic group which made this known in a statement, regretted that about 10 more #ENDSARS protesters were still languishing in prison.

In posts on X platform on Monday night, Amnesty International said that Joy-Igbo, Adigun, Anas, Oyetakin and many others are still being arbitrarily held in Kirikiri Medium Correctional Centre and other detention facilities including Awkuzu Police Division, popularly known as Awkuzu SARS in Anambra State.

Amnesty noted that one Iloanya Chijioke, has been held in Awkuzu Police Division in Anambra State since he was last seen in November 2012 after he was arrested by police officers from the Division.

Amnesty wrote, “#EndSARS: Amnesty International calls on the Nigerian authorities to also release: Daniel Joy-Igbo, Sodiq Adigun, Shehu Anas, and Akiniran Oyetakin – arrested in Lagos in 2020, still being arbitrarily held in Kirikiri Medium Correctional Centre since 2020.

“Many young men detained at SARS Awkuzu #Anambra state have disappeared. Iloanya Chijioke is one of them. He was last seen in November 2012. Where is Chijioke?”
