Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will be fully sedated to undergo surgery for a hernia on Sunday night.

His office announced that the operation would be done after a meeting of his war cabinet on Sunday evening.

The ailment was discovered during a routine checkup on Saturday night.

Justice Minister Yariv Levin, who is also the deputy prime minister, will stand in for Mr Netanyahu during the procedure.

SaharaReporters reported last week that Netanyahu had cancelled his planned visit to Washington to protest against a United Nations Security Council decision calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

The United Nations Security Council had demanded a ceasefire in Gaza during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, its first call to halt fighting.

Netanyahu accused the U.S. of allowing the vote to pass without conditioning the cease-fire on the release of hostages held by Hamas.
