The Take It Back Movement has expressed dismay at the recent tariff hike announced by President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

According to the group, the tariff hike “will unfairly burden Nigerian citizens, many of whom are already struggling to make ends meet”.

A statement signed by the TIB Global Director of Communications, Dr. Chidi Nwanyanwu, described the increment as unfair.

It said, “There are also concerns about its impact on human rights. Access to electricity is a basic human right, and an increase in prices could violate this right for many Nigerians.

“The government must take into account the potential impact on human rights when making its decision, and must ensure that any solution does not infringe on the fundamental rights of its citizens.

“The decision to raise electricity tariffs is not only unfair, but also potentially harmful to the people of Nigeria. The rising cost of living has already been putting a strain on families and businesses, and this decision could cause inflation to spiral even further out of control.

“We are especially concerned about the impact this will have on the most vulnerable members of society, who may not be able to afford the higher costs.

“Additionally, businesses may be forced to lay off workers or close their doors if they cannot afford the increased costs. The Tinubu government must take all of these factors into consideration.

“We strongly believe that the government should be exploring alternatives to raising electricity tariffs, such as investing in clean and renewable energy sources. By diversifying the country’s energy mix, we can not only reduce our reliance on fossil fuels but also create new jobs and opportunities in the renewable energy sector. This would be a win-win for both the economy and the environment.

“In light of the current economic situation, the Take It Back Movement calls on the government to put the well-being of its citizens first and foremost. Rather than further burdening the people with increased electricity costs, we urge the authorities to explore alternative, renewable sources of energy, such as solar, biogas, and wind power.

“These options have the potential to provide cheap and sustainable electricity, which would be a much-needed relief for Nigerians.”

TIB said if Nigeria truly wants to address its energy crisis, “the government should focus on addressing the root causes of the problem, rather than simply raising electricity tariffs”.

It said, “The Tinubu government should take Nigerians concerns into consideration and prioritize the well-being of the people.

“In conclusion, the Take It Back Movement strongly believes that the government’s decision to raise electricity tariffs is misguided and will ultimately do more harm than good.

“We demand that the government should reconsider this decision and explore alternative solutions that will meet the country’s energy needs without placing an undue burden on the people of Nigeria.”
