Tinubu Should Subsidise Electricity, Not Burden Nigerians – Workers Association Rejects Tariffs Hike
April 9, 2024

Recall on Tuesday last week, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) approved a rate rise for Band A users.

The Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies (SSAEAC) has rejected the 245 per cent tariffs hike by the electricity distribution companies which was recently approved by President Bola Tinubu.

Nnamdi Ajibo, the association's National Secretary, made their position known in a statement on Monday in response to the pricing increase for Band A energy users.

Recall on Tuesday last week, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) approved a rate rise for Band A users.

In response to the raise, SSAEAC stated that the government had done nothing in Nigeria's electricity industry to justify such a massive increase in tariffs.

The association referred to the rise as inappropriate and unacceptable. It argued that Tinubu's administration could not implement all of its renewed hope initiatives in a single year.

The workers added that the government should also reverse the failed privatisation of the power sector.

The statement reads: “We demand an urgent reversal to the status quo and acknowledge that exchange rates have also gone so high, thereby impacting the purchasing power of the common man.

“This government cannot implement the renewed hope agenda in one year. Worldwide, no nation treats its citizens this way and expects them to remain silent.

“There is nothing wrong in subsidising electricity and other essential aspects of the national lives of our citizens."

“The federal government should, as a matter of urgency, reverse the entire privatisation exercise and provide an enabling environment that will guarantee businesses to strive before searching for good managers to take over the management of the sector”, the statement added.
