The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has said it is investigating more celebrities involved in naira abuse.

This comes amid comments regarding the recent prosecution of popular crossdresser and socialite Idris Okuneye better known as Bobrisky for abusing the naira by the EFCC, which many Nigerians have described as selective.

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Friday sentenced Bobrisky to six months in jail without the option of a fine over naira abuse.

SaharaReporters earlier reported how Bobrisky was arrested by the anti-graft agency in Lagos State.

But according to a statement titled ‘Setting the Records Straight on Investigations of Humanitarian Ministry,’ signed by EFCC Head of Media & Publicity, Mr Dele Oyewale, on Sunday, the agency is investigating more celebrities for naira abuse.

It added that some of them had been invited and had made useful statements.

“At the moment, the Commission is investigating several celebrities involved in Naira abuse,” it said.

“Many of them have made useful statements to the Commission and many more have been invited by investigators working on the matter. The EFCC will not relent in its no-sacred-cow mode of operations and the public should be wary of running afoul of laws against the crime.”

It continued, “To this end, the Commission will always investigate and prosecute anyone involved in the abuse of the Naira.

“Old videos being exhumed and flying around for the attention of the Commission are noted as the Commission is sensitive to the fact that its Special Task Force against Naira Abuse and Dollarization of the economy commenced operations on February 7, 2024.  However, going forward, new videos of such infractions will be investigated and prosecuted.”
