Columbia University is the prestigious New York university at the heart of the protests against the war in Gaza that have been going on on university and college campuses for weeks.

The management of renowned Columbia University in the United States on Monday announced the cancellation of its main graduation ceremony following the unabating protests against the Israeli-Hamas war in Gaza, Palestine.

Columbia University is the prestigious New York university at the heart of the protests against the war in Gaza that have been going on on university and college campuses for weeks.

The graduation ceremony was for graduating students next week.

AFP reports that the Ivy League institution said it would "forego the university-wide ceremony that is scheduled for May 15" and hold a series of smaller events instead.

The university announced on Monday, "We are determined to give our students the celebration they deserve, and that they want," adding that "smaller-scale, school-based celebrations are most meaningful to them and their families."

According to the university, "We will focus our resources on those school ceremonies and on keeping them safe, respectful, and running smoothly. A great deal of effort is already underway to reach that goal."

Protests against Israel's war on Hamas in Gaza, Palestine have been rocking campuses across the US universities and colleges for weeks.

The protests have prompted crackdowns, mass arrests, and a White House directive to restore order.

Police last week evicted protesters occupying a Columbia University building and cleared out an unauthorised encampment on the campus lawn.
