Electricity Tariff Hike: Since Tinubu Doesn't Have Ear Problem Like Buhari, He Should Listen To Nigerians, Remove Power Minister – Lawyer, Inibehe Effiong

Inibehe said that he was sure that President Tinubu did not have auditory problems, hence, if he was serious, he should sack the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, for incompetence and insensitivity to the suffering of Nigerians.

Human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, has said that the President Bola Tinubu-led Nigerian government is terrorising Nigerians through the segregation of electricity supply to Nigerians into Bands amid the electricity tariff hike, fuel scarcity and price hike.

Inibehe said that he was sure that President Tinubu did not have auditory problems, hence, if he was serious, he should sack the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, for incompetence and insensitivity to the suffering of Nigerians.

Addressing journalists, the lawyer said, "If Tinubu is serious, the Minister of Power should be fired. The current government needs to ask itself very pertinent questions - why must this suffering continue? Because the so-called Band A is a fraud.

"Band A is a grand fraud. There is no Band A. Where I'm staying, we don't have a 24-hour power supply. Even 20 hours is debatable. Why should it be segregated? It looks like what happened in apartheid South Africa where the Africans and the Whites stayed in different areas and they had different services.

"I have an issue with the availability. I have an issue with the tariff. It is not sustainable. You just increased the tariff by over 300% and you have not increased Minimum Wage. N30,000 is still the minimum wage. It is simply unacceptable.”

Inibehe said that the Nigerian government should address the problems facing the country.

He said, “I start by saying that if Tinubu is serious, the Minister of Power should be fired because he has shown incompetence. The statement he is making is reckless.

“He is not being empathetic. He is not speaking like someone that is sensitive to the suffering of Nigerians. He doesn't even appear like he understands his responsibility.

"If the President can reshuffle his cabinet and bring in someone else as minister of power. Even if it is for symbolic purpose, he should give indication that he is listening. That the President hears what we are saying. Tinubu doesn't have auditory problems.

“I know Buhari had problems with his ears but Tinubu doesn't. So, there should be no excuse why the President should not hear what we are saying. It is simply inexcusable.

"This is terrorism. The government is terrorising Nigerians because if you don't have light and you don't have fuel, what are we living for under this excruciating son? It is very hot. One can't sleep at night.

"I feel like somewhere, it looks like a provocation, as if Nigerians are being tested to see what they can do; because, when will the suffering be enough?"

Inibehe further noted that if the Aso Rock Villa had power, Nigerians in every part of the country should have power.

"If there is light in the National Assembly, why shouldn't there be light in Alimosho? Why shouldn't there be light in Sokoto?

"We shouldn't have to suffer for a day in the country with the resources we have. The President has been in office close to a year, so I don't think President Tinubu can be excused at this point. He simply has to find a solution.

"This is not a renewed hope. Where is hope when you cannot find light, you cannot find patrol? It is crazy. I am now paying not less than N150,000 for power in the office, and close to N200,000 at where I'm staying. Imagine what I will have to spend in a year if this current system is to be sustained.

"In many states today, electricity in court is being ratioed. Once it is 2pm or at a particular time, power will go off in the court and magistrates and judges would have to stop sitting. Do you know the effect that has daily on access to justice?

"A typical example is the people in custody that have filed bail applications and their cases may not be heard because of lack of power in the court. The so-called DisCos are not providing the power. Many of our courts are depending on generators, and you can't even find the fuel to buy. How can you say there is access to justice?"
