Last week, the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC) announced the timetable for the conduct of the council polls scheduled for Saturday, July 13, 2024.

As the race to occupy the local government chairmanship seats across Delta State heats up, the people of Nsukwa clan in the Aniocha South Local Government Area of the state have protested to the Government House in Asaba over the chairmanship slot of the council.

Last week, the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC) announced the timetable for the conduct of the council polls scheduled for Saturday, July 13, 2024.

Since the release of the timetable for the council poll by the state electoral body, the people of Nsukwa clan under the umbrella of "Equity Crusaders" have insisted that it's their turn to produce the next council chairman in the election in the state.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Education (Technical) in the state, Joan Onyemaechi has tendered her resignation to pave the way for the second tenure of his younger brother.

Addressing her church congregation on Sunday during a service in Asaba, Onyemaechi announced her resignation from the cabinet of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori as Commissioner for Education (Technical) to pave the way for her younger brother who is contesting for the council chairmanship position.

Onyemaechi disclosed that following the bickering and jealousy being faced by her family over her brother's second-term bid, she decided to tender her resignation in the interest of her brother and clan.

But not satisfied with the resignation of the commissioner, the people of Nsukwa clan stormed the Government House in Asaba to call on Governor Oborevwori to allow their clan to produce the next council chairman in the poll.

The protesters numbering over 100 accused former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of conniving with the former commissioner to impose her younger brother on the people of Nsukwa clan, claiming it is their turn to produce the next council chairman.

The protesting youths barricaded the entrance to the Government House, thereby preventing workers and visitors from going in and out of the governor’s residence.

The protesters, who were mainly youths, claimed to be members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) under the aegis of 'Concerned Nsukwa Clan Youths'.

Some of the placards displayed read ‘Nsukwa Clan is not a political slave,’ ‘Say yes to equity, fairness, justice and balance in Aniocha south,’ ‘Youth of Aniocha South endorse Nsukwa Clan mandate,’ and ‘Say no to political impunity, manipulation and oppression in Aniocha South.’

Others read ‘On Equity we stand,’ ‘Nsukwa Clan Council Chairmanship 2024 is non-negotiable,’ ‘Senator Dr. Arthur Ifeanyi Okowa let Aniocha South South breathe,’ ‘Say no to family business in Aniocha South,’ ‘Nsukwa Clan deserved the Council Chairmanship’ and ‘Nsukwa Clan wants Council Chairman or no deal.’
